Retinol: When, How, and How Often
Share
You introduced retinol and acids, and your skin got worse.
New fine lines appeared, dryness and tightness increased, and sometimes even breakouts 😱
Why does this happen?
Let’s start with dryness and wrinkles. The reason is simple — you overdid it.
✅ When you first start using active ingredients, introduce them slowly into your skincare routine and carefully observe how your skin reacts.
🚫 The rule “the more, the better” does not work here.
It’s not about using actives more often — it’s about using them as often as your skin feels comfortable.
This rule applies to your entire skincare routine 👇
After purchasing new products, do not use everything at once. Introduce products gradually:
▪️ Start with cleansing — use it for a few days and observe your skin’s reaction
▪️ Then add toner, cream, and serum
▪️ Only after your skin adapts to all of these, introduce retinol and acids
If you notice dryness, itching, or peeling, take a break.
Afterward, continue using actives less frequently 😉
Another common issue is breakouts after introducing retinol and acids.
If your skin is acne-prone, flare-ups often occur when retinol is first introduced.
👌🏼 The good news: once your skin adapts, breakouts usually improve.
However, if breakouts do not decrease after a month, it usually means your skin is not properly hydrated or retinol is being used too often ‼️
Check whether your skin is getting enough hydration and try using retinol less frequently after a short break.
